Francis Cugat

Francis Cugat (born 1893—1981) was an artist whose most famous work was the original 1925 cover of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.[1]

Biography

Little is known of Cugat other than that he was born in Spain in 1893 and was the older brother of bandleader Xavier Cugat.[2] The Cugat family emigrated to Cuba in 1903.[3] It is also known that at one time, Francis was a designer in Hollywood for Douglas Fairbanks and had a 1942 show in New York, well after his famous work for The Great Gatsby.[2]
